How to Safely Handle and Dispose of Sharps

Be sure to always follow the instructions on your sharps label to ensure safe handling and proper disposal. Once you’re ready to dispose of your used sharps, place them in an FDA-approved container or a strong, puncture-resistant plastic container and keep it securely closed. Once sealed, bring the container to a nearby collection site for proper disposal.

Why Safe Sharps Disposal is Important

The rise in chronic disease, at-home care, and self-injectable medications has led to a growing stream of household sharps. Each year, about 9 million Americans use sharps at home, and over 3 billion injections are given outside of healthcare settings. It’s important to dispose of sharps properly, and ensure loved ones do, too.
